Privacy policy

MegaDebate is a place to argue about ideas. We collect what we need to run it, we don’t sell your information, and you can delete your account at any time.
MegaDebate is a product of AppDevNest Inc., which owns and operates it. AppDevNest Inc., a Canadian federal corporation based in Markham, Ontario (“we”, “us”; see company details), is responsible for your personal information under this policy.
What we collect
- Your account: email address, display name, username, and your password (stored only as a one-way hash, never in readable form). If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name, email address and an account ID from them; never your Google or Apple password.
- Your home city, if you choose one, so we can show debates near you.
- Organization emails, if you add any to join private rooms: the address, its organization’s domain, and when you verified it. Other people only ever see the organization, never the address.
- What you post and do: debates, arguments, replies, images, hashtags, votes, likes, reports, and people you block.
- Business accounts: business name, ad images and links, and records of your sponsorships, payments and credit. Card details go straight to our payment processor, Stripe; we never see or store your full card number.
- AI Judge purchases, MegaDebate Plus and Classroom Pro: which verdicts you unlocked, your subscription’s status and dates, and your Stripe customer ID. Card details go straight to Stripe. When Stripe sells these as merchant of record, it also collects your name and billing address to work out tax, under its own privacy policy.
- Sign-in and device information: for each signed-in session, the IP address, device or browser type, and when it was last used, so you can stay signed in and we can stop abuse. If you turn on push notifications, your browser gives us an address to send them to.
- Debate views: when you open a debate, we count one view per person per day. To avoid counting you twice we keep, for one day only, your account ID or (if you’re signed out) a one-way scrambled code made from your IP address and browser that can’t be turned back into them. We store only the number of views per debate per day, never who viewed. Views from the debate’s author, our staff, automated tools and cloud servers aren’t counted.
How we use it
- To run MegaDebate: show debates and arguments, count votes, and send the emails and notifications you ask for.
- A weekly email summing up activity on your debates and arguments, only in weeks when something happened. It never advertises anything. Turn it off with the link in any of those emails or in Account → Email.
- To keep it civil and safe: posts are checked automatically before they appear (text by AI models, images by an image-safety service), links in ads and debates are checked against Google’s list of unsafe sites, and people can report content to our moderators.
- To prevent abuse, such as spam, repeated failed sign-ins, and ban evasion.
- To show link previews: when a debate links to a page, our server visits it once to read its title, description and picture, and keeps a copy of the picture (checked like an uploaded image), so readers’ browsers don’t contact that site. Posts on X are shown as text from X’s public embed service, without X’s scripts.
- For business accounts: to run sponsorships, take payments, and apply refunds and credit.
- For the AI Judge: when someone asks for a verdict, the debate’s text, arguments and replies (without names) are sent to an AI model to write the summary and verdict.
- For private rooms: to check that you belong to an organization, and to remind you before your verification runs out.
- For classes: your teacher sees what you post in the class, counts of your arguments, replies and likes, and the marks and feedback they give you; only you and your teacher see your marks. If your teacher uses Classroom Pro, your class posts (without your name) are sent to an AI model to write feedback for your teacher, and to make AI Judge verdicts for the class.
We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t use it for advertising profiles.
What other people can see
Your display name, username, profile picture (if you add one), the debates and arguments you post, and the city a debate is in are public, except in private rooms, where only the room’s members see them. How you voted is never shown, only the totals. Your email addresses are never shown to other users.
Your profile page (megadebate.com/people/your-username) lists your public debates, arguments and replies, the month you joined, and a few counts (likes received, and how often the AI Judge picked your arguments among a side’s strongest points). It never includes private rooms or classes, and we ask search engines not to list profile pages.
Who helps us run the site
We share information only with the services that run parts of MegaDebate for us, and only what each one needs:
- Amazon Web Services (United States): hosting, database, file storage, sending email, the automatic checks on posts and images, and the AI models behind MegaDebateAI, the AI Judge and the Translate button (through Amazon Bedrock, which doesn’t use your content to train models).
- Google: city search, checking links for unsafe sites, and “Continue with Google” if you use it.
- Apple: “Sign in with Apple”, if you use it.
- Cloudflare (Turnstile): checking that sign-up and password-reset forms are sent by a person, not a bot. It looks at your browser and connection when you use those forms; it doesn’t set advertising cookies.
- Stripe: payments for business sponsorships, AI Judge verdicts, and MegaDebate Plus and Classroom Pro subscriptions.
Your information is stored in the United States and may be processed in other countries where these services operate. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, for example when we report child sexual abuse material to the authorities.
Cookies
We use only the cookies the site needs to work, and no advertising or tracking cookies:
- One that keeps you signed in.
- Ones that remember your chosen city, light or dark theme, and time zone (for the date at the top of the page).
Your browser also remembers a few choices on your device, such as whether you dismissed the offer to turn on notifications.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from your account page. When you do, we remove your email address, organization emails, password and Google or Apple link, replace your name with “Deleted user”, and erase the text of your arguments. Your debates are deleted too, unless other people have already argued on them or a business is sponsoring them; then the question stays so the discussion still makes sense, but its details and images are removed. Your votes stay in the totals without your name.
We keep records of moderation decisions to keep the site safe, and payment records as long as tax law requires. Deleted information disappears from our backups as they expire.
Your rights
You can download a copy of your information at any time (Account → Your data). You can also ask us to correct it, or ask questions about how we handle it: write to support@onlydebate.com. If you’re in Canada and not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Security
Everything is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS), passwords are stored only as hashes, and only our team can reach the systems that hold your information. No service can promise perfect security, so we’ll tell you if a breach affects you.
Age
MegaDebate isn’t for anyone under 16. If you believe someone under 16 has an account, write to us and we’ll remove it.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top, and tell you by email or on the site if the change is significant. Questions: support@onlydebate.com. See also our terms of use.
